Eight children were found fatally shot early Sunday at a home in Shreveport, Louisiana, following what police described as a domestic violence incident, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 6 a.m. local time in the Cedar Grove area of South Shreveport.

According to Shreveport Police Corporal Chris Bordelon, the suspect, Shamar Elkins father of seven of the deceased children was later shot and killed after a police pursuit.

Several other individuals were also injured in the incident, police said.
Authorities identified the victims as three boys and five girls, aged between 3 and 11.

The children, who were siblings and a cousin, were named by their mothers as Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5.

Police said Elkins, who previously served in the Louisiana Army National Guard for seven years and left the service in 2020 as a private, had posted photos with his children on social media.

Cpl. Bordelon said officers initially responded to reports of gunfire at the residence and later determined the case was domestic in nature.

After the alleged killings, the suspect reportedly carjacked a vehicle. Police pursued him into neighbouring Bossier Parish, where officers discharged their weapons and the suspect was pronounced dead.

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux described the incident as “maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had in Shreveport.”

Police Chief Wayne Smith said investigators are deploying all available resources to determine exactly what happened.
