Achraf Hakimi, captain of Morocco’s national football team, has rejected the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, stating that Morocco did not deserve it after their loss.
The Paris Saint-Germain defender expressed that, regardless of the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision, neither he nor his teammates should accept the trophy.
His remarks followed Morocco’s defeat to Senegal in the tournament final.
“My mum told me to reject the AFCON trophy. I’m officially rejecting it and I hope my teammates do the same. We had a chance but failed to win,” Hakimi said.
He acknowledged Senegal’s victory, stressing that they were worthy winners and warning against any actions that might diminish their achievement.
“That’s football, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Senegal beat us fairly and deserved it. It would be unfair to spoil their joy after all the hard work they put in,” he added.
Hakimi reiterated his respect for CAF’s position but maintained he could not accept a title that he believed Morocco did not earn on the field.
“I respect the CAF decision, but I’m officially rejecting the trophy. I didn’t win the 2025 AFCON.
Congratulations to Senegal once again,” he said.
Hakimi’s stance marks a rare moment in football where a player turns down recognition in the interest of sporting integrity.
Morocco, considered one of the tournament favorites, fell short, while Senegal’s victory was widely regarded as well-deserved based on their performance.
On March 17, 2026, the CAF Appeal Board ruled in favor of Morocco, citing Senegal’s walk-off as a forfeit under the regulations, overturning the 1–0 result to a 3–0 victory for Morocco.
The Senegalese Football Federation has announced it will appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
