Families and concerned sons and daughters of the community had gathered in Mbachom, ready to lay the victims to rest, but could not retrieve the bodies from the mortuary

The planned burial of 13 residents killed in a recent attack by suspected armed herdsmen in Turan community, Jato-Aka, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, was cancelled on Thursday, March 12, 2026.
Families and concerned sons and daughters of the community had gathered in Mbachom, ready to lay the victims to rest, but could not retrieve the bodies from the mortuary.
Bemgba Numve, a relative of one of the deceased, said the burial was called off because the mortuary attendant was not present to release the corpses.
“My brother was killed in the attack, and we planned to bury all 13 of them today. Everyone is here, including people who came from outside to witness the burial, but we could not retrieve the bodies of our loved ones from the mortuary,” Numve said.
He added, “We got to the mortuary and discovered that the mortician was taken away. There was nobody to release the corpses.
It is unfortunate that some people do not want us to carry out the burial, but they are our brothers and sisters, and we have the right to bury them on our own terms. We will still fix another date to do it.”
