U.S. President Donald Trump defended his administration’s efforts to lower prices, saying he’s faced increasing public frustration over the cost of living.

Speaking Monday to McDonald’s franchise owners and suppliers, Trump said he’s responsible for returning inflation to “normal” levels and promised that price growth will keep falling.

“We’ve brought it down to a low level, but we’re going to push it a little lower,” Trump said. “We want perfection.”

He then returned to his usual claim that Democrats mismanaged the economy, blaming cost‑pressure issues on former President Joe Biden and asserting that Americans were “so damn lucky” he won the 2024 election. “Nobody has done what we’ve done with pricing. We inherited a mess,” he added.

Trump’s 2024 campaign emphasized the cost of living, yet his protectionist economic approach has struggled to convince many Americans amid ongoing affordability worries.

An NBC News poll this month found that 66 percent of respondents felt Trump hadn’t met their expectations on affordability, and 63 percent said the same about the overall economy.

That price‑related frustration is cited as a major factor behind Republicans’ poor showing in the recent off‑year elections across several states.

Trump has proposed tariff‑funded $2,000 rebate checks and 50‑year mortgages to help ease affordability.

Although inflation has
fallen sharply from its 9.1 percent peak under Biden—a four‑decade high—it is still well above the Federal Reserve’s 2 percent goal.

In October, inflation climbed to 3 percent, marking the first return to that level since January; analysts had anticipated a higher number, citing the impact of Trump’s trade measures. Known for his fondness of McDonald’s, Trump spent much of Monday’s speech praising the chain and presenting it as a symbol of his economic vision.

He said, “Together we are fighting for an economy where everybody can win, from the cashier starting her first job to a franchisee opening their first location to the young family in a drive‑through line,” and expressed “special thanks” to McDonald’s for offering more affordable options.
