The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday directed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to halt its planned national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, until former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido is given access to a nomination form.
Justice Peter Lifu ruled that Lamido was unfairly denied the chance to contest for the party’s National Chairman position, a decision that contravened the PDP Constitution and internal rules.
The court also prohibited the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising, overseeing, or recognising any convention that excludes Lamido, and instructed the PDP to make the necessary nomination forms available so he could campaign and gather support.
In a related development, an Oyo State High Court on Thursday extended an interim order protecting the convention from any disruption. The court, however, dismissed an unsigned joinder application, stating it could be filed correctly at a later date.
The PDP has maintained that it remains committed to holding the convention as scheduled, alleging that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is using legal maneuvers to undermine the process.
