The faction loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has taken control of Wadata Plaza, the National Headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the party’s internal crisis deepens.
In a show of defiance, the group appointed Muhammed Abdulrahman as Acting National Chairman after the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) suspended National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu and other Wike loyalists.
In retaliation, the Wike faction announced the suspension of Damagum and several other party officials, declaring Abdulrahman as the new Acting National Chairman.
Speaking at the PDP Federal Capital Territory (FCT) office on Monday, Abdulrahman said he had assumed full control of the party’s leadership.
“We are all aware of the pitiable state of our great party due to the actions and inactions of some leaders and members. From being the ruling party for 16 years to an opposition for over 10 years, we have been weakened by defections and internal strife.
“I have accepted to serve as Acting National Chairman through the mercy of God and the support of critical stakeholders. My duty is to heal the party, end factionalisation, reposition it, and restore discipline,” he said.
Abdulrahman later moved into the PDP National Secretariat, where he addressed supporters and held a meeting attended by Anyanwu and other loyalists.
Supporters of Damagum were also seen around the premises, but a confrontation was averted after police deployed about ten Hilux patrol vans to maintain order.
