The Senate has approved Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

His confirmation came after a two-hour screening by lawmakers in the red chambers of the National Assembly, Abuja. During the session, Amupitan responded to critical questions from senators on elections, administration, policy, and the provisions of the Electoral Act.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had on Tuesday formally requested the Senate to confirm Amupitan following the conclusion of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure as INEC chairman. The request was contained in a letter read to the upper chamber by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
