The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has declared that the health condition of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is not life-threatening.

A medical panel set up by the NMA President, on the order of Justice James Omotosho, was directed to assess Kanu’s health following conflicting medical reports from the prosecution and defence teams in his terrorism trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

In its report submitted to the court on October 13 by the prosecution counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), and partly read during Thursday’s proceedings, the panel confirmed that Kanu is medically fit to stand trial.

Relying on the findings, and with no objection from either side, Justice Omotosho ruled that the case should proceed.

The judge granted Kanu six consecutive days, beginning on October 23, to open and close his defence.

Justice Omotosho also approved an oral application by Kanu’s lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), requesting a private consultation between the IPOB leader and his legal team outside the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Agabi had expressed concerns that their discussions with Kanu could be monitored or recorded by the DSS.

The court ordered that the private meeting be held inside the courtroom between 9 a.m. and 12 noon on October 22, with only Kanu and his lawyers present.

The trial is scheduled to resume on October 23.
