Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the esteemed leader of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere. Pa Adebanjo passed away in the early hours of Friday, February 14, 2024, at the age of 96, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State.
In a heartfelt statement, Igboho recalled the unwavering support Pa Adebanjo showed him during his imprisonment in Benin Republic. He revealed that the late elder statesman, despite his advanced age, sent an emissary to visit him in prison, expressing his solidarity with the Yoruba Nation movement.
According to Igboho, Pa Adebanjo conveyed that he wished he could have visited in person but was constrained by old age. However, he reassured Igboho that the struggle for Yoruba self-determination would eventually succeed.
Describing Pa Adebanjo’s passing as an immense loss to the Yoruba people and the international community, Igboho praised his lifelong dedication to the advancement of the Yoruba Nation.
He acknowledged Pa Adebanjo’s tireless advocacy for justice, democracy, and the rights of the Yoruba people, stating that his legacy would continue to inspire generations to come.
Chief Sunday Igboho extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Pa Ayo Adebanjo and to all Yoruba sons and daughters, both at home and in the diaspora.
He prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family in this difficult time.
The condolence message was conveyed through his aide, Olayomi Koiki.
