A US soldier has died in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance recovered from a downed Iranian drone, the United States military has confirmed.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the incident occurred on July 18.

Another service member sustained minor injuries during the operation. The identities of the soldiers have not been released.

The latest death brings the number of US military personnel killed since the outbreak of the US-Israel conflict with Iran on February 28 to 17.

Earlier, two US service members were killed in Iranian strikes in Jordan, while another was reported missing. CENTCOM said unidentified remains had been recovered from the site and were being examined.

The announcement came as the United States carried out an eighth consecutive night of strikes on Iran, while Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting US military assets in the Gulf region.

Tensions have intensified following the collapse of a temporary ceasefire amid disputes over control of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.

The conflict has claimed thousands of lives, mostly in Iran and Lebanon, and continues to raise concerns over regional security, energy supplies and the global economy.
