Colonel Ivan Voronich, a top officer in Ukraine’s security service, was assassinated on Thursday morning in Kyiv by a gunman wielding a silenced pistol.

The attack occurred in the Holosiivskyi district of the capital while Voronich was crossing the street near a block of flats.

The unknown assassin reportedly fired five shots at close range before fleeing.

Video footage shared on Telegram captured the moment the officer was gunned down beside parked cars.

A man was seen fleeing the scene, tucking a gun into his shorts, according to a report by The Telegraph.

Roman Chervinsky, a former intelligence officer, said the killing happened at about 8am. “With five shots at close range while leaving the apartment today at 8am, the enemy killer did his dirty work,” he stated, adding that Voronich had been fighting since 2014.

Former Ukrainian lawmaker Ihar Mosiychuk confirmed Voronich’s death at the scene and blamed Russian special services for the killing.

Voronich was reportedly the head of the 1st division of the 16th department in Ukraine’s security service, overseeing counter-terrorism and special operations.

The assassination comes amid a pattern of targeted killings on both sides of the ongoing war. In December, Ukraine’s intelligence agency killed a top Russian general in Moscow with a scooter bomb. Earlier in 2025, General Yaroslav Moskalik was also assassinated in Moscow via a car bomb.

In a separate incident in 2024, Russia claimed to have killed a Ukrainian spy allegedly planning an assassination on a defence industry official.

Meanwhile, Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities have intensified. On Tuesday night, Russia launched 741 drones and missiles in a single assault. The following night, another 400 drones and 18 missiles struck, killing at least two people in Kyiv during a 10-hour bombardment.

Reacting, President Volodymyr Zelensky called for stronger international sanctions and more urgent support.

“This demands that we speed things up. Sanctions must be imposed faster, and pressure on Russia must be strong enough that they truly feel the consequences of their terror,” he said.

Zelensky is scheduled to visit Rome on Thursday to seek additional funding and support for drone interceptors and air defence systems.
