The Universal Basic Education Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian child has access to quality education, regardless of social, economic or personal challenges.

UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr Aisha Garba, stated this during the commissioning of the renovated Alternative High School for Girls in Agboju, Lagos State.

Garba said the school would provide a second chance for girls and young women who had dropped out of school due to circumstances such as poverty, pregnancy, early marriage, family responsibilities and displacement.

She described the rehabilitation project as more than an improvement to school infrastructure, saying it was an investment in the future of girls whose education had been interrupted.

The UBEC intervention included renovated classrooms, furniture, ICT equipment, laboratory and vocational facilities, as well as improved water, sanitation and hygiene facilities.

Garba also announced that the Alternative High School for Girls in Ikorodu was nearing completion.

She said UBEC would provide the Agboju school with a bus and digital smart boards before the end of 2026.

She urged the Lagos State Government and members of the Agboju community to protect and maintain the facilities to ensure that the school continues to serve its intended purpose.

According to Garba, the true measure of the project’s success will be seen in the lives of the girls who return to education, acquire skills, gain employment, start businesses and contribute positively to their communities.

She said the Federal Government remained committed to expanding access to education, improving learning outcomes and ensuring that vulnerable and out-of-school children are given opportunities to fulfil their potential
