An outbreak of diphtheria in Edo State has claimed two lives, officials confirmed on Tuesday in Benin, the state capital.

Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, the State Commissioner for Health, announced the development during an emergency response meeting.

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital reported five diphtheria cases, including the two fatalities.

The meeting brought together representatives from WHO, UNICEF, local health authorities, and key partners working to address the public health emergency.

Oshiomhole described the outbreak as “a serious cause for concern,” highlighting the infection’s severity if untreated.

He explained that diphtheria is a contagious bacterial infection affecting the nose and throat, which can lead to serious complications or death.

“The increase in cases, combined with rising threats like drug resistance and viral infections, demands urgent, coordinated efforts,” he said.

Key measures include deploying a rapid response team, enhancing coordination, strengthening surveillance and contact tracing, raising public awareness, engaging communities, and ensuring vaccine availability.

The commissioner commended UBTH for their prompt action and acknowledged ongoing support from health partners.

He assured the public of the government’s commitment to containing the outbreak and urged citizens to report symptoms such as sore throat, fever, or difficulty breathing early.

People were advised to avoid close contact with the sick and to remain calm but vigilant.

“This is not a time to panic, but to prepare, inform, and act responsibly,” he added.
