The Cross River State Police Command has arrested two elderly men, aged 68 and 70, following allegations that they separately attempted to sexually assault a 12-year-old girl in Calabar.
The incident reportedly occurred around Thomas Henshaw Street in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The arrests followed a petition submitted to the police by the girl’s father after the allegations came to light.
The suspects were identified as Moris Monday, a 68-year-old shoe repairer, and Asuquo Effiom, aged 70.
They were arrested on Saturday, August 23, 2026, after concerned members of the community apprehended them and handed them over to the police around Hawkins Road, close to Thomas Henshaw Junction.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, preliminary investigations revealed that the girl alleged that Monday lured her into his room on two separate occasions, on August 13 and 14, where he allegedly attempted to sexually assault her.
The police said another allegation was subsequently made against Effiom.
The girl reportedly told investigators that on August 22, Effiom also lured her into his room and allegedly attempted to sexually assault her.
Following the complaint, police investigators immediately moved to Hawkins Road, where they found the two suspects in the custody of community members.
The suspects were subsequently taken into police custody for further questioning and investigation.
Eitokpah said both suspects have given statements to the police but denied the allegations against them.
He stressed that the investigation would be conducted professionally to establish the facts of the case.
The police have also referred the alleged victim to a government-approved medical facility for medical examination.
The examination is expected to form part of the evidence being considered by investigators.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation and necessary legal action.
The Cross River State Police Command assured the public that the allegations would be thoroughly investigated and that appropriate action would be taken in accordance with the law if the suspects are found to have committed the alleged offences.
The Command also appealed to members of the public to allow the police and relevant authorities to conduct the investigation without interference, while assuring residents that further developments would be communicated as the case progresses.
