Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan (L) with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas (R)

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause during a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday.

Erdogan emphasized Turkey’s intent to urge the international community to apply more pressure on Israel, according to a statement from his office.

The leaders discussed recent developments in Gaza and explored steps toward achieving a lasting ceasefire and peace. Erdogan condemned Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza, criticizing Western countries for their silence and continued backing of Israel.

Erdogan called on all nations, particularly those in the Muslim world, to enhance efforts to secure an immediate ceasefire and ensure the continuous delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians.

Abbas is scheduled to address an extraordinary session of Turkey’s parliament on Thursday, following Erdogan’s condemnation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the U.S. Congress in July.

Turkey, a strong critic of Israel’s actions since Hamas’ October 7 attack, has cut off trade with Israel and joined South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide.

Erdogan, a supporter of Hamas, mentioned plans to invite Hamas’ political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, who was recently assassinated in Tehran.
