Tuchel Backs His Strategy Despite England’s World Cup Heartbreak

England manager Thomas Tuchel has defended his tactical decisions following his team’s heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup semi-final.

The Three Lions looked on course for their first World Cup final appearance since 1966 after Anthony Gordon gave them the lead early in the second half in Atlanta.

However, Argentina mounted a late comeback, with Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez scoring to send the defending champions into the final.

Speaking after the match, Tuchel admitted England became too defensive after taking the lead and struggled to maintain possession under Argentina’s pressure. He explained that his decision to switch to a five-man defense and make defensive substitutions was intended to help the team cope with the growing threat.

The German coach rejected suggestions that his tactics cost England a place in the final, saying criticism is inevitable after a defeat and that no one can know whether different decisions would have produced a better result.

He accepted responsibility for his choices but insisted they were made in the team’s best interests.

Tuchel also revealed that he intends to remain in charge of England through to the 2028 European Championship, in line with the contract extension he signed earlier this year.

Despite the disappointment, he said he remains committed to leading the team into the next major tournament.
