US President Donald Trump is set to honour billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk with the National Medal of Science, one of the highest honours bestowed by the United States on individuals who have made significant contributions to science, engineering and technological development.
Trump is expected to present the prestigious award to Musk on Thursday at the White House during a special summit titled “Science: A New Golden Age.” The ceremony will bring together several leading figures from America’s technology and scientific communities.
Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang and Advanced Micro Devices CEO Lisa Su are also expected to receive the National Medal of Science alongside Musk.
Meanwhile, Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella are scheduled to receive the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, which recognises major achievements in technological advancement and innovation.
The ceremony will mark the first time Trump has presented either of the two prestigious medals during his two terms as president.
Musk’s decision to honour comes against the background of his once-close but later strained relationship with Trump.
Musk played a prominent role in Trump’s administration and was involved in efforts to reduce federal government spending and the size of the workforce.
However, the relationship between the two men later deteriorated publicly, leading to a highly publicised political and personal disagreement.
Despite the fallout, Musk was a major financial supporter of Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign.
Reports indicate that he contributed more than $290 million to efforts supporting Trump and Republican candidates.
Some of the other recipients have also supported Trump or Republican initiatives.
Brin reportedly made a donation to the Republican National Committee in 2025 and attended Trump’s second inauguration.
Dell and his wife, Susan, pledged $6.25 billion to Trump’s “Trump Accounts” programme, while Nvidia announced that it would match the US Treasury’s $1,000 contributions for its eligible employees.
White House spokesperson Liz Huston said the recipients were being recognised for their role in ensuring that the United States continues to maintain its global leadership in science, technology and innovation.
The awards are expected to attract significant attention as they bring together some of the world’s most influential technology leaders, while Musk’s recognition is likely to remain particularly notable because of his previous political alliance and subsequent public dispute with Trump.
