Former US President Donald Trump says he has a group of “very wealthy people” lined up to buy TikTok, the popular video-sharing app that was banned in the United States over national security concerns.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump teased, “I’ll tell you in about two weeks,” when asked about the potential buyers.
He added that the deal would still need approval from the Chinese government, but said he believed President Xi Jinping “will probably do it.”
Earlier this month, Trump delayed for the third time the enforcement of a US law requiring TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform.
The new deadline for the sale is now set for 17 September.
The BBC has contacted TikTok for comment.
A previous sale attempt fell through in April after tensions rose between the White House and Beijing over tariffs.
It remains unclear if Trump’s current buyer is connected to that earlier deal.
The push to force TikTok’s sale began in April last year, when US lawmakers passed legislation citing concerns that user data could be shared with the Chinese government—claims that TikTok has denied.
While Trump had previously criticised TikTok during his first term, he later credited the platform as helping his 2024 election victory and now supports its use in the US.
The enforcement of the sale law, originally scheduled to begin on 19 January, has repeatedly been postponed through executive actions by Trump—moves that have drawn criticism from members of Congress for sidestepping their authority.
TikTok challenged the law in court, claiming it was unconstitutional, but ultimately lost its appeal at the US Supreme Court.
