U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to allow American airlines to resume direct flights to Lebanon for the first time since 1985, following a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at the White House.
Direct flights between the two countries were suspended after the 1985 hijacking of TWA Flight 847, which was forced to land in Beirut during a 17-day hostage crisis that resulted in the death of a U.S. Navy diver.
Before flights can restart, U.S. authorities must carry out a comprehensive security assessment of Beirut’s airport and certify that it meets safety standards. It remains uncertain whether major U.S. airlines will immediately resume service.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it would work with airlines and other government agencies to implement the president’s directive and ensure the safe return of flights to Lebanon.
The U.S. State Department currently maintains a “Do Not Travel” advisory for Lebanon, citing security concerns and ongoing regional tensions.
Earlier this year, non-essential U.S. government personnel and their families were ordered to leave the country because of safety risks.
Trump also pledged continued U.S. support for Lebanon during his discussions with President Aoun, signaling efforts to strengthen ties between the two nations despite ongoing security challenges in the Middle East.
