US President Donald Trump has announced plans to rename the anniversaries of World War I and World War II as “Victory Day,” in a new move to reshape the country’s historical calendar.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared, “I am hereby renaming May 8th as Victory Day for World War II and November 11th as Victory Day for World War I.”
May 8, widely recognised in Europe as Victory Day, marks the Allied triumph over Nazi Germany in 1945. While commemorated informally in the US, it is not a public holiday. Trump argued that America contributed more than any other nation to the victory, stating, “Many of our allies and friends are celebrating May 8th as Victory Day, but we did more than any other Country, by far… in producing a victorious result.”
November 11, originally known as Armistice Day, was proclaimed by former President Woodrow Wilson to commemorate the end of World War I. It is now observed as Veterans Day in the US to honour military veterans.
Trump, however, believes the country should celebrate more boldly. “We won both Wars… but we never celebrate anything — That’s because we don’t have leaders anymore that know how to do so! We are going to start celebrating our victories again!” he said.
No formal executive order or official proclamation has yet been issued to enforce the renaming.
This is not the first time Trump has sought to revise official names. In his second term, he has proposed reverting Indigenous Peoples’ Day to Columbus Day and even suggested renaming the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America.”
During WWII, the United States, the Soviet Union, and Britain were allied against Nazi Germany. The Soviet Union, then consisting of 15 republics with Russia as the largest, suffered over 20 million casualties more than any other nation.
