Amending the U.S. Constitution to permit a third term would require approval from two-thirds of both the House and Senate or a constitutional convention called by two-thirds of U.S. states.

Donald Trump has again hinted at a possible third term in office, declaring in a phone interview with NBC News on Sunday that he is “not joking” about the idea.

The former U.S. president, who is currently serving his second term, suggested there are ways to bypass the constitutional two-term limit.

“There are methods which you could do it,” he stated.

Trump, 78, has frequently alluded to extending his presidency, but his latest remarks—reinforced by comments aboard Air Force One—are among his most explicit yet.

He claimed that many of his supporters are pushing for it.

“We have almost four years to go, and that’s a long time, but despite that, so many people are saying, ‘You’ve got to run again.’ They love the job we’re doing,” Trump said while on the presidential jet.

Asked if he was planning to remain in office beyond January 20, 2029, he responded vaguely, “I’m not looking at that, but I’ll tell you, I have had more people ask me to have a third term.”

Trump also claimed he had seen proposals that would allow him to run again.

When NBC asked about the possibility of Vice President JD Vance running and then stepping aside for him, Trump responded, “That’s one” method, adding that “there are others,” though he did not provide details.

Amending the U.S. Constitution to permit a third term would require approval from two-thirds of both the House and Senate or a constitutional convention called by two-thirds of U.S. states.

The amendment would then need ratification by three-quarters of state legislatures.

Such a move appears unlikely given the current distribution of political power.

In January, Republican lawmaker Andy Ogles of Tennessee introduced a resolution to amend the Constitution and allow presidents to serve three terms, but it remains far from becoming law
