U.S. President Donald Trump has given Russia a 50-day deadline to end its invasion of Ukraine or face sweeping new economic sanctions, including tariffs of up to 100 percent.
Trump issued the warning on Monday during a meeting at the White House with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, where he also announced a major weapons package for Ukraine through the NATO alliance.
“I’m very, very unhappy with Putin,” Trump said. “We’re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don’t have a deal in 50 days — tariffs at about 100 percent.”
The proposed sanctions would include secondary tariffs targeting Russia’s remaining trade partners, in a bid to further isolate Moscow. China, Russia’s top trading partner, accounted for about 34 percent of its foreign trade last year, followed by India, Turkey, and Belarus, according to the Russian Federal Customs Service.
Trump and Rutte also unveiled a new NATO agreement to purchase billions of dollars’ worth of U.S. weapons including Patriot missile defence systems for delivery to Ukraine.
