Troops Recover Large Herd of Rustled Cattle After Terrorists Flee Gun Battle in Sokoto

Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have recovered a large herd of cattle allegedly rustled by suspected terrorists after intercepting the group in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The troops reportedly acted on credible intelligence concerning the movement of the suspected terrorists and the cattle they were allegedly taking away from Asarara Kaura community.

The military operation took place on Monday morning along the Tambuwal–Gadaichi–Gummi axis, where the troops caught up with the fleeing suspects.

A military source familiar with the operation said the suspected terrorists engaged the troops in a gun battle when they were intercepted.

The confrontation reportedly forced the suspects to retreat into the surrounding bushes. Some of them were believed to have sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange of fire.

In their attempt to escape, the terrorists abandoned the cattle, which were subsequently recovered by the troops and taken into military custody.

The source said the troops responded promptly after receiving intelligence about the movement of the suspected terrorists and the rustled livestock.

According to the source, “The troops responded to credible intelligence and intercepted the terrorists along the Tambuwal–Gadaichi–Gummi axis.

They engaged the troops but were forced to flee into the bushes, some of them sustaining gunshot wounds. They abandoned the cattle while escaping.”

The military said the recovered livestock would remain in its custody while efforts are made to establish their rightful ownership.

The source added that the cattle would be returned to the affected owners and communities once the verification process had been completed.

“The cattle will be handed over to the rightful owners after proper verification. The objective is to ensure that the recovered livestock gets back to the affected communities,” the source said.

The recovery is expected to provide relief to residents of the affected communities, many of whom depend on livestock and agricultural activities for their livelihoods.

Cattle rustling has remained a security and economic concern in parts of the North-West, with criminal groups frequently targeting livestock belonging to rural communities.

The latest operation is part of the military’s continuing efforts to disrupt the activities of terrorists and other criminal elements operating across the region.

Troops under Operation Fansan Yamma have continued to conduct intelligence-led operations aimed at intercepting criminal groups, recovering stolen property and improving security in affected communities.

The military operation in Sokoto also highlights the importance of timely intelligence in efforts to track suspected terrorists and recover property allegedly taken from local residents.

Although the suspected terrorists escaped into the bushes, troops recovered the cattle and continued efforts to locate those who fled the scene.
