Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has rejected speculation of divisions within the ruling junta, insisting that he remains the country’s sole leader and warning anyone seeking to challenge his authority.
Addressing community leaders in northern Burkina Faso, Traoré said there could not be “two captains on one ship” and stressed that everyone around him understands how he leads.
He warned that anyone who undermines his leadership would face immediate consequences.
The comments come amid growing speculation over the absence of two key junta figures — Oumarou Yabré, head of the intelligence services, and Farouk Azaria Sorgho, the junta’s spokesman and a senior military commander.
Both men have not appeared publicly for several weeks, fueling reports of possible tensions within the military government.
The military administration came to power following a coup in September 2022.
While no official explanation has been given for the absence of the two officials, Traoré’s remarks appear aimed at quelling rumours and reaffirming his grip on power.
Security measures have also been tightened in the capital, Ouagadougou, with increased checkpoints and heightened protection around key government facilities.
Traoré’s latest statement underscores his determination to maintain control as questions continue to swirl about the inner workings of Burkina Faso’s ruling junta.
