Mbah said Tinubu’s leadership style and reform agenda resonated with his own views on governance and development

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu’s bold economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market, were key factors that influenced his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during a media chat on Tuesday, shortly after formally announcing his defection to the ruling party, Mbah said Tinubu’s leadership style and reform agenda resonated with his own views on governance and development.
“I fell in love with this President from the day he removed fuel subsidy and unified the forex market,” Mbah said. “Given my background in the oil and gas sector, I’ve written in support of these reforms in the past. The subsidy had to go.”
Mbah emphasized that his move was not merely political but driven by shared principles and a vision for national growth.
“This is beyond party politics—it’s about leadership. It’s about who occupies the leadership position and how aligned you are with their vision,” he said. “I have a good relationship with the President, no doubt.”
He also praised Tinubu’s focus on devolution of powers and decentralised development, stating that empowering states is vital for national economic growth.
“To achieve a $1 trillion economy by 2030, states must be empowered. We need a leader committed to that, and President Tinubu fits that vision,” Mbah added.
Earlier, while declaring his defection, Mbah noted that his goal is to reshape the political and economic landscape of Enugu State.
