Tinubu Seeks Reps Approval For State Police Bill, Pushes Constitutional Amendment

President Bola Tinubu has asked the House of Representatives to consider and approve the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026, aimed at creating a constitutional framework for the establishment of state police services across the country.

The request was conveyed in a letter read on the floor of the House on Tuesday, in which the President said the proposed amendment to the 1999 Constitution is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture by allowing the creation of state police.

Tinubu explained that the bill builds on previous legislative efforts by the House of Representatives and introduces additional safeguards to ensure the smooth operation of a dual policing system involving both the Federal Government and state governments.

According to the President, the proposed legislation is intended to provide a constitutional pathway for establishing state police services in response to the country’s changing security needs.

He noted that the bill seeks to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges through a more responsive and efficient policing structure while ensuring appropriate checks for the effective operation of both federal and state police.

Tinubu described the proposal as a major component of his administration’s security reform agenda and urged lawmakers to give it speedy consideration.

He expressed confidence that the House of Representatives would act promptly on the bill, saying its passage would help reorganise Nigeria’s security system to better protect lives and property.

The development comes about two weeks after the Senate approved a similar constitutional amendment bill seeking the creation of state police across the federation.

The Senate passed the proposal after it received the support of more than two-thirds of senators, satisfying the constitutional threshold for amending the 1999 Constitution.

If the House of Representatives also approves the bill and it is subsequently endorsed by the required number of state Houses of Assembly, it will clear the way for the establishment of state police services in Nigeria as part of efforts to address the country’s growing security challenges.
