President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday attended the official premiere of MKO, a documentary chronicling the life, political journey and legacy of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.
The premiere took place at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts in Lagos, ahead of the documentary’s nationwide cinema release scheduled for Friday.
Directed by Nigerian-American filmmaker Ose Oyamendan, the documentary explores Abiola’s political career and his prominent role in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.
A major focus of the film is the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as a significant turning point in Nigeria’s political history.
The election was annulled by the military government of the time, triggering a prolonged political crisis and a nationwide campaign for the restoration of democracy.
The documentary also examines Abiola’s subsequent detention and the events surrounding the pro-democracy struggle that followed the annulment.
Abiola is widely regarded as the presumed winner of the June 12 election, while the annulment of the poll and his detention became defining episodes in Nigeria’s struggle against military rule.
The film uses archival footage and first-hand accounts from personalities connected to the events to present different perspectives on Abiola’s political activities, his detention and the movement for democratic governance.
MKO had its international premiere at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival in the United Kingdom in June 2026.
The Lagos premiere attracted senior government officials, political leaders, cultural personalities and other prominent Nigerians who gathered to reflect on Abiola’s contribution to Nigeria’s democratic history.
President Tinubu attended the event alongside the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
Also present were Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Other dignitaries included Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu.
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, were also among those who attended.
Former Ogun State Governor Segun Osoba and several other dignitaries were present at the event.
The documentary places Abiola’s personal and political experiences within the wider circumstances surrounding Nigeria’s transition from military rule to democratic government.
His detention following the annulment of the June 12 election remains an important chapter in the country’s pro-democracy history.
With its nationwide cinema release, the documentary is expected to introduce younger audiences and the wider public to the events surrounding the 1993 election and the struggle that followed.
The premiere also provided an opportunity for guests to revisit some of the major political events that influenced Nigeria’s democratic development
