President Bola Tinubu has appointed Abel Enitan as the new Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, with the appointment taking effect on August 27, 2026.
Enitan will succeed Didi Esther Walson-Jack, who is retiring from the Federal Civil Service after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60.
An indigene of Osun State, Enitan is currently the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education and is the longest-serving Permanent Secretary in the Federal Civil Service.
He has held the position for seven years and seven months, during which he served in the Ministry of Police Affairs, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the Office of the Vice President.
The appointment was announced on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
He said Enitan’s extensive experience and knowledge of the workings of government made him well suited for the new responsibility.
President Tinubu commended the outgoing Head of Service, Walson-Jack, for her contributions to the country and for the reforms and innovations introduced into the Civil Service during her tenure.
The President also tasked Enitan with strengthening ongoing reforms, improving professionalism and efficiency, and ensuring that the Civil Service becomes more responsive to the needs of Nigerians.
Tinubu urged the incoming Head of Service to promote a Civil Service that is professional, merit-based, accountable, innovative and focused on effective service delivery in line with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Enitan was born on December 12, 1966. He attended Ajibode Grammar School, Ibadan, and the College of Arts and Science, Ile-Ife, before proceeding to the University of Lagos, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Banking in 1988.
He later earned a Master of Science degree in Public Policy Analysis from Nasarawa State University, Lafia, in 2015.
Enitan is expected to officially assume office on August 27, following Walson-Jack’s retirement
