Storm Knocks Down Three Power Transmission Towers in Nasarawa, Disrupts Electricity Supply

Three electricity transmission towers have collapsed along the Karu-Keffi-Akwanga 132kV transmission line in Nasarawa State, causing a major disruption to bulk power supply in parts of Keffi and Akwanga.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced the incident in a statement on Thursday, October 8, 2026, stating that the towers collapsed during rainy and windy weather conditions on Wednesday.

According to the company, Towers T78, T79 and T80 were affected by the incident, forcing TCN to isolate the damaged section of the transmission line to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:06 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, when the 132kV Karu-Keffi-Akwanga Single Circuit Transmission Line tripped after its overcurrent relay protection was activated.

Following the unexpected trip, TCN engineers commenced investigations to determine the cause of the disruption.

The assessment revealed that three transmission towers had collapsed along the line corridor.

TCN subsequently isolated the affected portion of the network, leaving all 33kV outgoing feeders connected to the 132/33kV Keffi and 132/33kV Akwanga transmission substations unavailable.

The development has affected the ability of electricity distribution companies to receive and distribute bulk electricity through the affected feeders.

As a result, residents, businesses and other electricity consumers supplied through the affected network may experience power outages until restoration work is completed.

The transmission company said its engineers were already at the affected location to assess the extent of the damage.

The technical team is also expected to identify the equipment, materials and other resources required to rebuild or repair the damaged infrastructure.

However, TCN did not give a definite date for the restoration of electricity supply, explaining that the duration of the repair process would depend on the outcome of the technical assessment and the extent of damage discovered.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of Nigeria’s electricity transmission infrastructure to extreme weather conditions, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Transmission towers and lines serve as critical links between the national grid and electricity distribution networks.

When major transmission infrastructure is damaged, several communities can lose access to bulk electricity even when power generation is available elsewhere on the national grid.

TCN appealed for patience from electricity consumers affected by the disruption, assuring them that efforts were being made to restore supply as quickly as possible.

The company expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the collapse and said its technical personnel would continue working at the site until the necessary repairs are completed.

TCN added that it would provide further information on the restoration process as work progresses and more details become available.
