The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has lambasted the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, accusing him of panic-driven outbursts over the growing strength of the opposition coalition.
KoikiMedia reports that Wike has come under scrutiny following allegations that he allocated about 6,000 hectares of land in Maitama and Asokoro to his sons. Since the coalition’s adoption of the ADC, the minister has been accused of growing jittery.
Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had earlier vowed to lead President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign. However, he recently changed his position, claiming only the PDP could challenge Tinubu in 2027.
Responding to his latest remarks, ADC said Wike had abandoned his responsibilities in the FCT to chase political distractions.
Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesperson for the coalition, said Wike’s conduct falls far below what is expected of a Federal Minister.
“Without justifying this behaviour that we find incompatible with the office of a Federal Minister, we believe Minister Wike could only descend to that level because of his mortal fear of the threat that the successful unveiling of the coalition of opposition political parties constitutes to the government that he serves,” Abdullahi said.
He noted that if Wike and the administration had fulfilled their promises to Nigerians, there would be no need for an opposition coalition or the minister’s frantic reactions.
“If Minister Wike had paid the salaries of primary school teachers who have been on strike for months, and if he had not treated FCT workers with contempt while commissioning white elephant projects running into billions of naira, he wouldn’t be this worried,” he said.
Abdullahi also countered Wike’s claim that coalition leaders are driven by personal grievances.
“If we have any grievances, it is against a government that has plunged millions into poverty and misery. We are aggrieved that poor children can’t access education because their teachers are not paid. We are aggrieved by the rising insecurity in the FCT under Wike’s watch. We are aggrieved that he has allowed himself to be used to dismantle one of Africa’s most powerful political parties, the PDP.”
He insisted that the coalition movement cannot be stopped.
“The coalition belongs to the Nigerian people who were promised renewed hope but have instead been handed renewed hopelessness. No amount of tirade from Minister Wike or anyone else will stop this popular movement,” the statement added.
