Sowore Vows To Reverse Public Facilities Named After Tinubu, Others If Elected

African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has said he would reverse the naming of public facilities, highways and national assets after President Bola Tinubu and other serving public officials if elected president in 2027.

Sowore stated this in a post shared on his Facebook page on Friday, following the Federal Government’s decision to rename the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after Tinubu.

He described the move as one that would not stand under his administration, insisting that public assets named after officials of the current government would be restored or renamed.

“The naming of highways, national institutions, and public assets after officials of the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu regime that impoverished Nigeria and those who enabled its decline will be reversed as a matter of urgency under a #Sowore2027 administration,” he wrote.

His comments came a day after the Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway had been renamed the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway.

Umahi made the announcement during a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, saying the decision was taken in recognition of Tinubu’s vision for the project.

According to the minister, the renaming was approved by the Ministry of Works after consultations with the ministry’s leadership.

“That (coastal) highway is named President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway.

“By the powers conferred on me as Minister of Works, in consultation with my Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, directors and staff of the ministry, we decided to name it after him because of his dream for it.

“He had that dream about 27 years back as governor of Lagos State. It is one thing to dream and another thing to have the grace of God to actualise that dream,” Umahi said.

The minister also disclosed that Tinubu approved a 400-kilometre extension of the Fourth Legacy Highway, increasing the project from 700 kilometres to 1,100 kilometres.

He added that the approval also covers the reconstruction of sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and other major road projects across the country.

Sowore has recently unveiled a number of policy proposals ahead of the 2027 presidential election, including plans to abolish the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and scrap the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in their current forms.

He argued that tertiary institutions should conduct their own admissions through a transparent, merit-based system, while proposing that the NYSC be replaced with a voluntary two-year National Job Corps focused on employment, entrepreneurship and practical skills.
