Singapore’s Acting Minister-in-Charge of Muslim Affairs, Faishal Ibrahim, has resigned from the government and the ruling People’s Action Party following what Prime Minister Lawrence Wong described as inappropriate interactions with a woman.
In a statement on Monday, Wong said most of the interactions took place through online messages, while the pair also met at public events. Both individuals later accused each other of harassment, prompting a police investigation.
The prime minister said no criminal offence had been committed and no criminal charges would be filed.
However, he noted that questions remained about whether Faishal’s conduct met the standards expected of a political office holder and member of parliament.
Faishal, who has served as a member of parliament since 2006 and became Acting Minister-in-Charge of Muslim Affairs in 2025, acknowledged a lapse in judgment. In his resignation letter, he said there was no physical relationship but admitted he failed to establish clear boundaries early enough.
Wong said he was saddened by Faishal’s departure under such circumstances.
The resignation adds to a series of political scandals that have recently affected Singapore’s People’s Action Party, which has long promoted a reputation for integrity and clean governance.
