OYO, Nigeria – No fewer than five people were killed and three others injured in a road accident along old Oyo-Ogbomoso road on Friday night, Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in the southwestern Oyo State said.
The accident involved two vehicles carrying 11 passengers, Sector Commander Mary Alo of FRSC, Oyo State Command said.
“The injured are currently receiving treatment at Ladoke Akintola Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, while the bodies have been deposited in the hospital’s mortuary,” Alo told The Punch newspaper.
She revealed that the collision occurred between a white commercial truck, without company details or registration number, and a commercial ash-coloured space bus with registration number LRN 185 YR. The head-on collision resulted in the deaths of five people, while three others were injured.
“The accident took place approximately three kilometres from Ile-Abu in Ogbomoso, and was attributed to speeding,” Alo said. “It was a head-on collision on a single carriageway. Five people died — three men and two women. The injured include two men and one woman. The vehicles carried 11 passengers in total — eight men and three women. Three men were not injured.”
She urged drivers to avoid wrongful overtaking and speeding.
Items recovered from the scene included a travel box, three school bags, two small travel bags, a crossbody bag, a sack bag, a first aid box, two plastic bags, eight smartphones, and four purses containing a total of N20,350.
The two vehicles involved have been towed by the police.
