Rescue Efforts Underway as Student Hostel Collapses in Anambra, Several Feared Trapped

Emergency responders are racing to rescue occupants after a three-storey student hostel, Elite Five Star Lodge, collapsed in Amokpala, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The building, located beside Tonimas Filling Station, reportedly collapsed in the early hours of Monday while students and other occupants were inside.
Witnesses said the incident triggered panic across the community.

One resident, Ifeoma, said a loud noise was heard shortly before the building gave way, prompting residents and students to rush to the scene.

Rescue teams from the Anambra State Fire Service, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), security agencies, and volunteers have been searching through the debris for survivors.

The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and said a joint security team immediately secured the area and coordinated rescue operations.

According to him, several injured victims have been pulled from the rubble and taken to a hospital in Oko for treatment, while efforts continue to reach others who may still be trapped.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of casualties or those affected. Residents have been advised to remain calm and allow emergency workers unrestricted access to the site as rescue operations continue.
