Portugal forward Rafael Leão has been handed the iconic No. 7 shirt following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the national team camp.

The change was confirmed after UEFA released Portugal’s official squad list for the team’s upcoming international fixture against Denmark in Copenhagen. Leão was listed as the new wearer of the number that has been strongly associated with Ronaldo for much of his illustrious international career.

Ronaldo’s departure comes amid growing attention surrounding his relationship with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus.

The 41-year-old captain has reportedly been unhappy with his reduced role under the manager, with the situation becoming increasingly evident during the team’s recent matches.

Despite his status as Portugal’s captain and all-time leading goalscorer, Ronaldo has spent significant periods on the substitutes’ bench in recent fixtures.

His reduced playing time has generated considerable discussion among Portuguese football supporters and the wider football community.

The situation was again highlighted during Portugal’s recent victory over Norway, when Ronaldo remained among the substitutes for the match.

Following the game, Ronaldo announced that he had decided to leave the national team training camp.

According to the veteran forward, the decision followed a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Ronaldo said he had made the decision after the national team’s press conference and his subsequent discussion with the federation president.

“After the press conference of the national team, and following a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have made the decision to leave the national team training camp,” Ronaldo stated.

The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus forward added that he would explain the circumstances surrounding his decision at a later date.

“In due course, I will tell all the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led me to leave the national team, to which I always dedicated myself,” he said.

Ronaldo’s exit has now created an opportunity for Leão to take over the No. 7 shirt, one of the most recognisable numbers in Portuguese football.

Ronaldo wore the number for many years and helped make it an important part of his identity at both club and international level.

Leão, who has established himself as one of Portugal’s leading attacking players, will now carry the famous number as the national team prepares for its next international assignment.

The AC Milan forward is expected to play an important role in Portugal’s attack, particularly as the team manages the transition surrounding Ronaldo’s reduced involvement with the national side.

The decision to give Leão the No. 7 shirt represents a notable moment for Portugal as the team moves into a new phase, although Ronaldo’s enormous contribution to the national team remains a defining part of the country’s football history.

Ronaldo is Portugal’s record international goalscorer and has represented the country at the highest level for more than two decades.

His departure from the current camp and Leão’s assumption of the No. 7 shirt therefore mark a significant change for the Portuguese national team.
