In a recent live call during Olayomi Koiki’s broadcast, the renowned Yoruba historian and leader of the Yoruba Nation Movement, Prof. Adebanji Akintoye, delivered a powerful message to the Yoruba people, encouraging them not to seek apologies but to take bold and decisive steps towards building a country of their own.

“Do not apologize for standing firm; it is my duty to help create the right conditions for you to establish your own nation,” Prof. Akintoye declared, stressing that the time has come for the Yoruba to reclaim their rightful place as a sovereign and prosperous people.

According to the respected scholar, the Yoruba land is vast and richly endowed far larger than the United Kingdom, France, and Germany with a population comparable to these European nations. “We are a great nation, blessed with fertile land capable of producing every type of crop. Our people are among the most educated in the world, and millions of Yoruba sons and daughters are spread across the globe, contributing to development wherever they are found,” he noted.

Prof. Akintoye emphasized that he eagerly awaits the day when Yoruba descendants will fully possess and govern their homeland. “The movement is gaining momentum, our leaders are making the right decisions, and the smaller matters are being taken care of. God has made me part of this historic struggle. Sooner than many expect, and in a peaceful way, we will enter our own country,” he said confidently.

He also hinted that persistence and resilience might be necessary: “If we must apply a little stubbornness in this noble cause, then so be it. We have done this before remember 1965, when Yoruba elites almost sold us out to the Fulanis during the elections. By December that same year, we reclaimed our land after fighting back.”

Prof. Akintoye reminded the Yoruba people that they are not a minor or insignificant race. “You are destined to fight back, reclaim your land, and transform it into a prosperous, technologically advanced, and globally respected nation.

It is you not anyone else who will decide what happens to your destiny. I am 90 years old, growing older as nature demands, but I stand firmly and unwaveringly behind you.”

He called on Yoruba people to stop asking what the future holds but instead to determine that future by decisively working towards nationhood. “We know the Federal Government holds power, resources, and influence, but we have something greater: ourselves and God. You must settle it in your hearts to pursue this cause until success is achieved that is all that matters,” he urged.

Addressing the internal rift within the Afenifere group, Prof. Akintoye criticized factions loyal to the late Chief Adebanjo for focusing on condemning President Bola Tinubu’s government and calling for impeachment. “This will lead nowhere. You all know Tinubu will not allow himself to be impeached. Such actions only create confusion and mockery in our land. Instead, come forward, join the Yoruba self-determination movement, and let’s build our own nation that is the real solution,” he said.

Prof. Akintoye concluded with a sober reminder: “Freedom is never cheap. The price will be high. But we must be ready to pay it.”
