The Special Adviser on Political Matters in the Office of the Vice President, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has resigned after 17 months in office.
Appointed in September 2023, Baba-Ahmed represented the presidency at various public engagements.
Sources within the presidency confirmed his resignation, stating that he cited personal reasons without further details.
It remains unclear whether the presidency has officially accepted his resignation.
During his tenure, Baba-Ahmed played a key role in national discussions, including his participation in the “Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy” conference in Abuja in January 2025.
However, his role was not without controversy, particularly in his exchanges with the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle.
In April 2024, tensions arose when Matawalle urged northern appointees to defend the Tinubu administration against criticism, a comment widely seen as directed at Baba-Ahmed.
The friction stemmed from Baba-Ahmed’s defence of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) after Matawalle dismissed the group as politically irrelevant.
Responding to the minister’s remarks, Baba-Ahmed argued that appointees should focus on showcasing their contributions to governance rather than attacking critics.
In turn, Matawalle insisted that presidential appointees must actively defend the administration against unjust attacks.
Baba-Ahmed, a former NEF spokesman, has yet to disclose his next move following his resignation.
