ADO-EKITI – A police officer’s accidental discharge of a firearm claimed the life of a woman in Nigeria’s southwestern city of Ado-Ekiti on Thursday, local news outlets report, citing police.
The incident occurred near the Okela Police Post, where the woman had reportedly gone to visit her detained husband.
While standing outside a salon opposite the station, the victim was reportedly struck by the officer’s bullet and was rushed to a nearest hospital where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police AIG Akinwale Adeniran was quoted as saying that the officer involved has been disarmed and detained for interrogation in line with the Police Act.
The incident highlights the urgent need for strict adherence to firearm safety protocols among law enforcement personnel.
