The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved a petition by the family of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, seeking a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, under circumstances that have continued to raise questions, with his family calling for a comprehensive forensic investigation into the cause of his death.
The family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, disclosed this in a statement dated September 29, 2026, saying the police investigation was ongoing despite the recent dismissal of a separate suit by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to Ogungbe, the family submitted its petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, while the police officially received it on May 7.
The family reportedly raised concerns about inconsistencies in the previous investigation and requested a fresh and comprehensive forensic process.
Ogungbe said Disu approved the petition and directed the Lagos State Police Command to take immediate action.
He added that the case had been assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau for further investigation.
“The family’s representative has since been invited and has engaged with the new team of investigators assigned to the matter,” the statement reads.
“The family has continued to follow up with the investigators and remained engaged with the new investigative process.”
The lawyer clarified that the ongoing police investigation was separate from a suit filed by the Break the Silence Foundation at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The court recently dismissed the NGO’s suit, which sought an order for a re-investigation into Mohbad’s death.
Ogungbe said the dismissal of the suit had no bearing on the investigation initiated following the family’s petition to the police.
“The Aloba Family therefore does not wish the public to conflate the dismissal of that suit with the separate investigative process already commenced pursuant to the Family’s petition to the Inspector-General of Police,” the statement added.
The family said it remained willing to assist the investigators by providing relevant documents, information, witnesses and other materials that could aid the probe.
It also urged the police to “conduct the investigation with diligence, independence and professionalism”.
In May 2024, pathologists who examined Mohbad’s remains said they could not determine the cause of death due to advanced decomposition.
