Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has granted absolute pardon to 130 inmates across custodial facilities in the state and commuted the death sentences of four other inmates to life imprisonment.

The governor announced the exercise of his prerogative of mercy on Thursday as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

Mutfwang disclosed the decision in a goodwill message to the people of Plateau State and Nigerians living in the country and abroad, explaining that the exercise followed consultations with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

He said the action was taken in accordance with the powers vested in him by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

According to the governor, “After due consultation with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, Governor Mutfwang has granted absolute pardon to 130 inmates, while four inmates serving death sentences had their sentences reduced to life imprisonment.”

The governor said the Independence Anniversary provided Nigerians with an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey since independence, acknowledge its progress and recognise the sacrifices made by past leaders in building the nation.

He noted that the anniversary should also serve as a moment for citizens to reflect on the challenges confronting the country while renewing their collective commitment to building a stronger, united and prosperous Nigeria.

Mutfwang urged Nigerians to uphold the legacy of the country’s founding fathers by protecting the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation.

He stressed that nation-building was a continuous responsibility that had been transferred from one generation to another, adding that every Nigerian had a role to play in creating a peaceful, stable and prosperous country.

The governor maintained that Nigeria’s strength remained rooted in the collective determination of its citizens to rise above their differences and work towards a nation where everyone could enjoy a sense of belonging and have opportunities to fulfil their aspirations.

Mutfwang also acknowledged the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu toward sustaining national unity and stability and advancing the development of the country.

He commended the President’s continued emphasis on national cohesion, peace, economic development and the collective responsibility of Nigerians in building a stronger nation.

On Plateau State, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating a state where residents could pursue their aspirations in an atmosphere of peace, security, justice and inclusive development.

He commended the people of Plateau for their resilience, patience, patriotism and contributions to the development of the state and the country at large.

Mutfwang urged residents to remain committed to the Nigerian project despite the difficulties confronting the nation, stressing the importance of unity and collective responsibility in overcoming the country’s challenges.

He expressed his hope that the Independence Anniversary would inspire Nigerians to renew their commitment to peace, progress and national development.

The governor wished Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora a peaceful, meaningful and memorable 66th Independence Anniversary.

He also called on citizens to continue contributing their quota toward building a nation worthy of the sacrifices made by the country’s past heroes and capable of meeting the aspirations of generations yet unborn.
