Oyo – Nigeria: A septuagenarian, Madam Rachael Bamidele, has died in a land dispute that occurred in the Aagba community, located in the Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The conflict also led to the burning of nine houses and the destruction or looting of properties worth millions.

According to a statement from the Oyo Police Command spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, the attack appeared to have been planned and systematically executed, with the goal of targeting individuals involved in a civil dispute over the contested land.

The incident, which forced the residents to flee, was allegedly carried out by people from a neighbouring community, stemming from a long-standing land disagreement.

The police responded swiftly to the attack on April 5, 2025, deploying specialized intelligence and tactical assets, including a unit of PMF officers, to restore order in the community.

Osifeso said, “The incident was meticulously planned and executed with a specific target—those involved in a civil dispute over land in the community.”

The police intervention helped calm the situation, allowing residents to return to their homes and resume daily activities without fear of further attacks.

Following the incident, one suspect, Salawudeen Ismaila, aged 33, from the neighbouring Oko community, was apprehended, along with eight other suspects.

Additionally, three unregistered Boxer motorcycles were recovered and efforts are ongoing to capture other suspects who remain at large.

The arrested individuals are expected to appear in court soon.

Osifeso added, “In response to this attack, we deployed tactical teams to restore peace to the community, allowing residents to resume normal life and mitigate the impact of the attack.”

The Oyo State Police Command reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards acts of lawlessness and criminality, assuring residents that it remains committed to safeguarding their lives and property while addressing any violations of law and order.

“Under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, we assure all residents of our continued commitment to enforcing the rule of law and protecting life and property,” Osifeso concluded.
