Oyo Government Begins Demolition of Shanties, Illegal Structures in Ibadan

The Oyo State Government, on Thursday, launched a demolition exercise targeting illegal structures and shanties in Ibadan, the state capital.

The operation began at St. Gabriel’s Secondary Commercial School in the Sabo-Jembewon area, where security personnel from Operation Burst, the Nigeria Police, Nigerian Army, NSCDC, and Amotekun were deployed to prevent resistance from the affected dwellers.

The state’s Rule of Law Enforcement Authority, led by its chairperson, Hon Justice Aderonke Aderemi (retd), spearheaded the demolition, enforcing the Executive Order signed by Governor Seyi Makinde in 2023.

Aderemi insisted that the state would not back down on the demolition of shanties, emphasising the need for compliance with the Executive Order to maintain safety and order.

She noted that the affected shanties posed serious safety risks to students as they were attached to the school’s fence and had become hideouts for criminals, drug dealers, and perpetrators of various vices.

Omololu Babatola, a representative from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, described the Sabo-Jembewon area as a challenge to education, justifying the government’s decision to demolish the structures.

Authorities confirmed that adequate notice was given to occupants before the demolition commenced.
