Osun Governorship Election: INEC Begins Distribution of Sensitive Materials

The Independent National Electoral Commission has started distributing sensitive election materials to all 30 local government areas of Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The distribution began on Thursday night under the supervision of the Osun Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oluwatoyin Babalola.

The exercise was delayed after a Federal High Court ordered INEC to include the Social Democratic Party on the ballot.

Following the ruling, INEC printed additional ballot papers and result sheets, adding the SDP to the list of 15 political parties contesting the election.

By 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, buses carrying the election materials were leaving the Central Bank of Nigeria premises in Osogbo for their designated local government areas.

Umar Mohammed, Senior Programme Manager of the Kimpat Development Initiative, described the arrival and distribution of the materials as a positive development.

He said there had been concerns that the court ruling might disrupt the election timetable or lead to a postponement.

Mohammed also commended INEC’s distribution strategy, noting that the commission appeared to be giving priority to local government areas that are considered difficult to access.

However, he expressed concern that rainfall could create additional challenges for the transportation and distribution of the sensitive materials.

He urged favourable weather conditions to ensure that the materials reach all locations safely and on time ahead of Saturday’s election.

The Osun governorship election is scheduled to hold across the state on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
