Oluremi Tinubu Calls on Nigerians to Reduce Food Waste, Promote Environmental Sustainability

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to reduce food waste and adopt sustainable practices that can help protect the environment and promote cleaner, healthier communities.

Tinubu made the call in a message marking the 2026 World Cleanup Day, observed on Sunday with the theme, “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities.”

She said the emphasis on food waste was particularly important given the growing impact of climate change, conflicts and other global challenges on food production, distribution and supply.

According to the First Lady, the challenges affecting food systems make it necessary for individuals, households, businesses and communities to become more conscious of how food is purchased, prepared, consumed and preserved.

She urged Nigerians to avoid buying more food than they need, properly preserve available food and make efforts to ensure that edible food is consumed rather than unnecessarily discarded.

Tinubu also called for improved waste disposal practices, stressing that proper management of refuse was important to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

She encouraged businesses and communities to support sustainable practices that would reduce the amount of waste generated and promote environmental responsibility.

The First Lady said addressing food waste required collective action, noting that individuals and organisations all had roles to play in protecting the environment.

She said responsible consumption and proper waste management could contribute to cleaner surroundings while also helping communities make better use of available resources.

Tinubu further encouraged Nigerians to use the World Cleanup Day campaign as an opportunity to develop lasting habits that would promote environmental cleanliness and sustainability.

She stressed that the responsibility for creating cleaner communities should not be left to government alone, urging citizens to take practical steps in their homes, workplaces and communities.

The First Lady expressed optimism that sustained individual and collective efforts would contribute to healthier communities and a more sustainable environment.

She said, “Through our collective efforts, we can build cleaner, healthier communities for present and future generations.”

She therefore urged Nigerians to make food conservation, responsible consumption and proper waste disposal part of their everyday practices as part of broader efforts to protect the environment for future generations.
