Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has challenged Nigerians and the wider public to scrutinise his personal, educational and political background and identify any wrongdoing he may have committed.
Obi made the challenge on Thursday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, during a town hall meeting with voters titled “Obi Talks Nigeria,” where he responded to questions about the 2027 general elections and his political ambitions.
The former Anambra State governor said he and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had deliberately made their personal and educational records available for public examination.
“I want to give every Nigerian the opportunity to know who I am,” Obi said.
He explained that details concerning their dates of birth, educational institutions, academic records and other aspects of their backgrounds could be independently verified.
“Both of us have presented our backgrounds, from our dates of birth to our schools, education and all, to the people.
You can go and verify our backgrounds worldwide, anywhere,” he stated.
Obi’s comments come at a time of increased public interest in the backgrounds, records and past activities of politicians seeking to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The NDC presidential candidate also made a reference to his legal dispute with Kenneth Okonkwo, who served as his spokesperson during the 2023 presidential campaign.
The dispute reportedly relates to alleged defamatory statements concerning their previous dealings.
According to Obi, legal action was taken after Okonkwo allegedly claimed that he had information about Obi’s past that could shock Nigerians.
“We have sued somebody in court. He said he knows something he can say and the people will be shocked. I said I want you to say what people will be shocked about,” Obi said.
He subsequently challenged Nigerians to come forward with any evidence of wrongdoing against him.
“And I’m challenging every Nigerian. If there is anything that you know I have done that is wrong, say it out now,” he said.
Obi extended the same challenge to his running mate, Kwankwaso, urging anyone with credible information about alleged wrongdoing by the former Kano State governor to make it public.
“I’m challenging the world over: if you know anything that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has done that is wrong, say it out now,” he added
.
The NDC candidate further argued that anyone seeking to occupy Nigeria’s highest political office must emerge through a credible, transparent and trustworthy electoral process.
According to him, the integrity of the process that produces political leaders is just as important as the individuals who eventually emerge.
“You cannot continue to answer His Excellency when the process that got you there is not excellent,” Obi said.
He maintained that Nigerians deserve leaders whose records can withstand public scrutiny and whose emergence is based on a transparent and credible democratic process.
