North Korea has firmly stated that the United States must acknowledge its current nuclear status, insisting that the dynamics between both nations have significantly shifted since their previous summit engagements. According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Pyongyang emphasized that no future dialogue would result in the dismantling of its nuclear arsenal.
Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un who is widely seen as a key voice for the regime acknowledged that the personal rapport between her brother and former U.S. President Donald Trump remains amicable. However, she made it clear that any attempt by Washington to leverage that relationship in pursuit of denuclearization would be met with ridicule.
“If the United States refuses to accept the new reality and continues to rely on outdated strategies, any future DPRK-U.S. talks will remain nothing more than wishful thinking on the part of America,” Kim stated, using the acronym for North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
She underscored that North Korea’s position as a nuclear-armed state has evolved considerably since Trump and Kim held their three historic meetings during Trump’s first term in office. “Efforts to deny the DPRK’s identity as a nuclear weapons state will be firmly rebuffed,” Kim added.
In a separate development highlighting Pyongyang’s growing alignment with Moscow, KCNA reported that a direct passenger flight from Moscow landed in Pyongyang on Monday the first such flight in decades. This move is seen as part of increasing bilateral cooperation between North Korea and Russia.
The growing ties have drawn criticism from the U.S. and its allies, especially given allegations that North Korea has supplied troops and weapons to support Russia’s war in Ukraine. In return, Moscow is believed to be offering technological assistance to Pyongyang, further deepening their strategic partnership.
When asked about North Korea’s recent statements, a White House official responded that Trump continues to uphold the goals he pursued during his meetings with Kim. “The President remains committed to a denuclearized Korean Peninsula and is open to future dialogue with Leader Kim,” the official told Reuters.
Trump and Kim first met in Singapore in 2018, where they signed a joint declaration aimed at the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. However, a follow-up summit in Hanoi in 2019 ended abruptly due to disagreements over the lifting of international sanctions on North Korea.
Despite the setbacks, Trump has repeatedly claimed to have a “great relationship” with Kim. The White House has also indicated the President’s willingness to re-engage with the North Korean leadership, though Pyongyang appears increasingly resistant to any negotiations that challenge its nuclear status.
