A viral Facebook post attributed to Nigeria News Reporter has falsely claimed that Yoruba Nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo (popularly known as Sunday Igboho) accepted ₦50 billion to abandon his campaign for the Oduduwa Republic. The post, quoting a supposed remark by former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, contrasts Igboho with detained IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, alleging that Igboho “accepted money” while Kanu “rejected ₦500 billion.”
Olayomi Koiki can confirm that this story is completely unfounded, lacks credible sourcing, and misrepresents both personalities and public records.
1. The Viral Claim
The Facebook post, shared widely in mid-October 2025, quoted Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as saying:
“Sunday Igboho was allegedly offered ₦50 billion to abandon his agitation for the Oduduwa Republic, and he accepted.”
The post further alleged that Igboho has been secretly compensated by the Federal Government while enjoying personal liberty abroad.
However, a detailed verification of Sanusi’s verified media accounts and all major Nigerian news platforms—Channels TV, Premium Times, Vanguard, The Cable, and Daily Trust—reveals no record whatsoever of the former Emir making any statement of this nature. Neither Sanusi nor any of his known spokespersons has ever referenced Sunday Igboho or Nnamdi Kanu in such context.
2. Igboho’s Legal and Personal Situation
Chief Sunday Igboho remains a self-described Yoruba self-determination activist whose legal battles with the Nigerian Government have been widely documented.
- His properties in Ibadan remain under Federal seizure following the 2021 DSS raid.
- He spent months in detention in Cotonou, Benin Republic, after fleeing Nigeria.
- He has not been cleared of charges nor granted full legal freedom in Nigeria.
According to KoikiMedia ’s independent sources and verified court documents, there is no evidence that Igboho has engaged in any negotiation with the Federal Government over financial settlements or political deals.
3. Official Rebuttals and Clarifications
In response to the viral post, representatives close to Sunday Igboho including his media aide, Olayomi Koiki described the allegations as “baseless propaganda meant to discredit the Yoruba Nation movement.”
“Chief Sunday Adeyemo has never met or discussed any financial offer with the Federal Government or its agents,” Koiki stated. “The ₦50 billion story is fabricated to sow division among freedom advocates.”
Koiki further stressed that Igboho remains committed to peaceful advocacy for regional autonomy and the protection of Yoruba people’s rights.
4. No Evidence From Sanusi
Checks on the official X (Twitter) and Facebook pages of Muhammadu Sanusi II, as well as public archives of his media statements, show no interview, speech, or press release in which he mentioned either Nnamdi Kanu or Sunday Igboho in the quoted language.
Political analysts also noted that Sanusi, a respected economist and former Central Bank Governor, rarely comments on separatist activism and typically focuses on governance and economic reform.
This strongly indicates that the post was fabricated using his name to lend false credibility to an unverified claim.
5. The Broader Context
False stories linking activists to “cash settlements” are common tactics used in social-media misinformation wars. Experts from the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) warn that such narratives are designed to:
- Discredit activism by implying financial corruption.
- Inflame ethnic divisions by comparing movements.
- Erode public trust in verified journalism.
6. The Facts Stand
- Sunday Igboho has not received ₦50 billion or any payment from the Nigerian Government or private sources.
- There is no public record or credible statement from Muhammadu Sanusi II making such allegations.
- Igboho remains under partial legal restriction, with ongoing property disputes and travel limitations.
- The viral post is false and misleading.
7. Conclusion
The social-media post attributing a ₦50 billion payout to Sunday Igboho is a deliberate fabrication with no basis in verified evidence or official record.
Chief Sunday Adeyemo remains recognized by his supporters as a freedom fighter and community defender, not a beneficiary of political bribery.
Olayomi urges the public to verify before sharing, and calls on social-media platforms to curb the spread of false political information that could incite misunderstanding among Nigerians.
