Nigeria – Abuja: The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has apologised to the Federal Government, Justice Binta Nyako, and his legal team for his previous outbursts in court.
Kanu, through his new lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), expressed regret over his remarks, attributing them to frustration and his prolonged detention.
The apology was delivered on Friday before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Agabi, a former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), conveyed Kanu’s remorse, stating that his criticism of Justice Nyako and his former legal representatives, led by Aloy Ejimakor, was unwarranted.
“Kanu has been angry for a long time, and that anger led to statements that were not right,” Agabi told the court.
“He deeply regrets his words against Justice Nyako and his legal representatives. He also apologises to the Federal Government’s lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), and the prosecution team.”
The defence counsel described Kanu as a good man who, like everyone, is prone to mistakes.
“We must strive to save, not destroy,” he added, appealing for patience and understanding.
In response, Awomolo (SAN), who represents the Federal Government, accepted the apology, acknowledging the emotions surrounding the case.
He assured that the prosecution would work towards a speedy trial.
Justice Omotosho noted that the prolonged trial had likely affected Kanu.
“When he was first arraigned in 2015, he was 47 years old; now he is 57, and he still does not know where he is headed. This frustration may have contributed to his actions,” the judge stated.
He further apologised to the prosecution on Kanu’s behalf and urged both parties to focus on resolving the legal dispute without unnecessary distractions.
Meanwhile, IPOB supporters continue to demand Kanu’s unconditional release, insisting that his detention is politically motivated.
However, the Federal Government maintains that he must face trial for alleged treasonable felony and terrorism-related offences.
