Indian authorities have reportedly linked a Nigerian national to an alleged international drug trafficking network following the interception of an Iranian vessel carrying narcotics estimated to be worth about $330 million.
The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) said the Nigerian national allegedly served as an intermediary between a wanted suspect based in Gujarat and other members of the suspected trafficking network.
The investigation followed a joint operation conducted by the Gujarat ATS and the Indian Coast Guard on September 25.
During the operation, security personnel intercepted an Iranian vessel in the Arabian Sea and recovered 526 kilogrammes of suspected narcotics.
According to Indian authorities, the seized consignment consisted of approximately 400kg of methamphetamine and 126kg of heroin.
The large quantity of drugs prompted further investigations into the individuals allegedly responsible for transporting and distributing the consignment.
Investigators reportedly received intelligence about a meeting between the Nigerian national and a wanted Gujarat-based suspect in Ahmedabad.
The information was subsequently passed to the Indian Coast Guard, which tracked the vessel and intercepted it northwest of Lakshadweep.
Authorities believe the seizure may be connected to a larger international drug trafficking operation allegedly associated with Pakistan-based suspected drug trafficker Haji Salim.
Investigators said the drugs were allegedly destined for Punjab, where they were expected to be distributed across northern parts of India.
The consignment was reportedly intended to be transferred from the Iranian vessel to a fishing boat in Indian waters before being moved towards the Tamil Nadu coast.
Five Pakistani nationals found aboard the intercepted vessel were arrested during the operation.
Their arrests have reportedly provided investigators with additional leads as they work to establish the wider structure of the alleged trafficking network and identify other individuals involved.
The vessel was also reportedly found carrying a Starlink communication device.
Investigators suspect the device may have been used to facilitate communication between those aboard the vessel and suspected handlers or coordinators operating from Pakistan.
The Gujarat ATS is continuing its investigation into the alleged international trafficking operation.
Authorities are also working to establish the Nigerian national’s alleged role, trace other suspected members of the network and determine the intended route and final distribution points of the seized drugs.
The allegations against the Nigerian national remain subject to investigation, and any criminal liability would ultimately have to be established through the relevant legal process.
