The Nigerian Special Military Task Force, Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), has confirmed that eight vigilantes were killed during an ambush by bandits on Sunday, July 6, 2025, in the Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The confirmation comes amid earlier reports that dozens of vigilantes were killed in the attack. However, OPSH claimed that eight security operatives were killed.
In a statement released on Wednesday, OPSH spokesman, Major Samson Zhakom, provided details of the incident, also claiming that the vigilantes undertook the operation without notifying security agencies.
“On 6 July 2025, a large group of vigilantes mobilised from Kanam LGA with the intent to conduct an independent operation without notifying OPSH troops,” the statement read.
According to Major Zhakom, the vigilantes initially gathered in Kukawa community, where tensions escalated between them and local residents.
OPSH alleged that the vigilantes attacked civilians and looted several provision shops during the confrontation.
“Reports indicate that they attacked civilians and looted several provision shops in the area. Additionally, the vigilantes allegedly seized over 20 motorcycles from Kukawa residents, claiming they were finalising administrative procedures before proceeding to Odare Forest for their mission,” OPSH disclosed.
While advancing toward Odare Forest for their operation, the vigilante group was ambushed by bandits, leading to the deaths of eight members, with others are still reported missing as of press time.
“The remains of the deceased have been recovered and buried, while troops from Sector 2 OPSH in Wase are conducting search and rescue operations to locate the missing individuals,” OPSH stated.
The task force used the opportunity to caution vigilante groups and community security outfits against embarking on unauthorised operations without coordination with official security agencies.
OPSH stressed that independent actions, no matter how well-intentioned, could jeopardise the safety of operatives and civilians alike.
“While we recognise the vigilantes’ intent to protect underserved areas, independent actions without OPSH’s approval endanger both the operatives and innocent civilians,” OPSH warned.
OPSH emphasised its commitment to maintaining peace and security across Plateau State and vowed to take decisive measures against any individuals or groups undermining ongoing security efforts.
The statement also urged residents of Plateau State to continue supporting security agencies by providing credible intelligence and reporting suspicious activities.
“We urge the public to continue supporting security agencies by providing actionable intelligence and reporting suspicious activities within their communities,” OPSH concluded.
